I've been one before. One of the millions of people who crawl out of the woodwork on January 1st and take over the treadmills at the gym. And like millions of them before me, I quit after a few weeks. BUT...the last two years I didn't. I kept going. And now I'm on the other side of this quandary.
This time of year is a test of patience for those people who work out regularly. We have our routines. We have our familiar faces. We have our favorite workout equipment, or swim lane, or parking spot. We know when we need to get in and out to avoid certain people, or to make sure we see others. We know where the towels are to wipe down equipment. We know where to put the towels when we are done. We are the 'veterans'. The gym is our place.
Except in January.
In January we have to share. Sharing is hard. Ask any 2 year old.
Like any 2 year old, gym regulars get fussy when their routine is disrupted.
Like any 2 year old, they get cranky when they don't get to use their favorite
Several years ago, my SIL (the personal trainer) posted something about this on facebook. At the time, I was one of the many wanna-bes hitting the gym to start off the new year right. I took offense, and gave her crap about it.
But now I see her point.
So...if you are a NYR, and don't want to annoy the regulars, I have one piece of advice for you.
DON'T QUIT! Keep showing up.
You will be amazed that after a month or two, it won't hurt so much. You won't be as tired. It won't be such a chore to make it to the gym.
Because then next year you can bitch and moan...like one of us!
