5 Stages of a Swim Workout

I love to swim.  The swim is the leg of triathlon that I don't stress about.  Aside from the reality check of a DNF in a choppy reservoir a few months ago, the swim has always been my happy place.  I love the smell of chlorine.  I love that feeling of being completely wrung out after a really intense workout.  That being said...getting that workout in is a different story.  Just because I know how good I'll feel after the workout doesn't mean I want to do it.  Sometimes it takes a major internal monologue to get into the pool in the first place.

Over time, I found that just like grief, there are 5 stages of a swim work out:

  • I'm too tired
  • The water is too cold
  • It's too dark out
  • The water is too warm
  • The pool is too crowded
  • I won't get out in time and I'll have to be in the shower with all the water fitness ladies
  • I.  Don't.  Wanna!!!
  • I don't really need to be an Ironman.  
  • This f'ing water is too cold
  • This f'ing water is too warm
  • This f'ing lane is too crowded
  • That guy can't read a f'ing clock
  • Why does everybody keep hitting me with their f'ing garmins?
  • I'm too f'ing tired to put up with this crap
  • What was I thinking?
  • Who wrote this f'ing workout anyway?
  • If I finish this 100 I am half way done with this set
  • If I finish this set I can have pasta for dinner
  • If I beat her to the wall I get to rest an extra 10 seconds
  • If I beat her to the wall again I can have cheesecake
  • If I finish this workout I can sleep in tomorrow
  • If I finish this workout I never have to swim again
  • I'm still only half way done
  • Why am I always last?
  • Why can't I seem to make my times?
  • Why do I do this to myself?
  • Why am I so slow?
  • I'm so tired
  • I'm soooo tired
  • What was I thinking?
  • I'm almost done
  • Holy crap I made it
  • One more 100 and I'm done
  • Oh thank God
  • Hmm...I guess I could do it afterall
  • Wow...you are one whiny chick
  • Man...I love swimming
  • That was awesome
  • Damn I'm hungry
  • I love the smell of chlorine
